"The heresy of one age becomes the orthodoxy of the next." (Helen Keller, 1903)

Gnosticism
Gnosticism held that the physical world was corrupt and irredeemable, and that only the spiritual world was holy.

As our series on heresies of the early church draws to a close, our final heresy this Sunday will be Gnosticism. Gnosticism, in a nutshell, was the idea that the physical world--this creation--was something less perfect, less holy, than the spiritual realm, and that therefore it must have been created and ruled by a lesser God.

This Sunday also happens to be Pentecost, when we celebrate specifically the gift of the Holy Spirit being present in this physical creation. If you'd like to learn more about Gnosticism, or any of the heresies we've explored, feel free to check out the copy of "Heretics for Armchair Theologians" in the fellowship hall. Our Bible text for this Sunday will be Luke 13:1-5 and Acts 2:1-21.
